7 Ways to Keep Your Home Cool in the Summer Without Breaking the Bank

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

1. Fans

Making a small investment towards ceiling, box, and stand fans can reduce your energy costs while keeping you cool. Via the “wind chill” effect, you can be comfy in your home without sacrificing pennies to keep your thermostat at a steady temperature. Remember, fans are only meant to keep you cool, not the entire room. So don’t forget to turn them off when you are done!

2. Close Your Blinds and Check Your Seals

Keeping your curtains closed during the day will help keep the heat out of your home, saving your air conditioning. Be sure to check the weather stripping on your doors and windows. Good insulation can help prevent air from escaping outside.

3. Raise the Temperature of Your Thermostat

Although this sounds like the exact opposite of what you want to do, decreasing the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperatures could lower your bill. Lowering the indoor temp leads to high energy bills since your A/C is fighting to keep the inside air cooler than what is outside. Consider turning off the air conditioning when you leave the house to save a little more change.

4. Upgrade Your Air Conditioner and Appliances

Heating and cooling use nearly half of your energy bill. Upgrading to an energy efficient system is a smart move to save you money over time. If upgrading is not for you, at least consider scheduling routine system checks to make sure your air conditioning is functioning properly.

5. Relax and Unplug

Small electronics, TV’s, and computers can use up your summer energy. Unplug them when you leave the house to save close to $100 a month.

6. Keep Your Fridge Cold

Setting your fridge temperature between 35 and 38 degreed Fahrenheit and your freezer between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit can help use less energy. Make sure your fridge is always full, even if it is just jugs of water or juice. Less space means your refrigerator and freezer don’t have to work as hard to keep everything cold.

7. Change Your Air Filter

One of the most essential parts of your A/C is the air filter. Dirty air filters can make your system overwork, causing it to use more energy. Also, dirty air filters can circulate dust, hair, dirt, and allergens throughout your home, making the summer a hard time for those with allergies. It is recommended you change your filter every 3 months, so summer is a perfect time to switch filters.

Now that you’ve learned 7 ways to keep your energy cost down, enjoy your summer without sweating the small stuff!
